Keeping fit in Andalucia can be fun.

Sports is big in Spain, as we are all frequently reminded with a quick look at the news; it´s not just the likes of Nadal, and Casillas that like to keep in shape. Along with Football and Tennis; Basketball, Swimming, Cycling and Athletics are all equally popular in Andalucia as in the rest of the country. Not only that but Andalucia has the added bonus of a vast coastline, and Malaga in particular reaps the benefits of this; with is beaches and port, watersports are increasingly popular. Here are a few places you can go if you want to keep in shape in Malaga, or just practice your favourite sport.

 

 

SOLINCA HEALTH & FITNESS CLUB

This is a total 21st century fitness centre, with around 30 types of exercise classes on offer, including: yoga, salsa aerobic, push-power, power-bike, circuit training, aero box, and much more. The Centre is large and airy and has experienced, highly qualified staff and instructors. The club also has a Health & Beauty clinic offering a vast range of treatments, including facials, slimming and anti-stress programmes. There is a large indoor, heated swimming pool and many aqua fitness classes are included in the timetable. There are also special Rehabilitation programmes offered by qualified physiotherapists using the swimming pool and hydrotherapy bath for controlled exercises for sports injuries, circulation problems, osteoporosis, etc.

BELLAVISTA

Gymnasio Bellavista is a 'city' gym and offers a good range of classes. Although the official opening hours for weekdays is 09:00, there are aerobic classes Monday, Wednesday and Friday, which start at 08:30 - with the working man/woman in mind, since many businesses open at 10:00 in Málaga. Amongst the classes on offer are gym-jazz, step, karate and yoga. The club also has a small heated swimming pool where they have 'aquagym' classes at specified times. There are also Passive machines, as well as sauna, Jacuzzi and UVA sun treatment. A massage can also be booked by appointment.

FITNESS CENTRE

This gym is owned and run by Jose Manuel Acosta, who was Mr. Universe 2002. His Fitness Centre is on the way into the centre of Malaga (off the Avenida de Andalucia) and almost all the members and staff are Spanish, with classes given in Spanish only. The machine and weights room is large and airy and usually pounding with loud, motivating music. Plenty of energetic classes are on offer, including aerobics, spinning, body pump, karate. New to the class timetable is yoga and Tai Chi. Mr. Universe also specializes in sports nutrition, which is on sale at the gym. He also offers advice on equipment if you are thinking of setting up a private gym at home.

BODY FACTORY

This is a very busy, lively club with lots of classes and activities going on all day, the most popular times being after 19:00 and onwards, when people finish work. Because peak times are particularly crowded, special off-peak membership rates are also available. As well as the usual aerobics, body conditioning and step classes, there are extra classes such as Yoga, salsa and Tai Chi for an extra cost. This is a Spanish city club, but some of the staff do speak a little English and a few club members are also English speaking foreigners, but the classes are given in Spanish.

Malaga Tennis Club is more than just a Tennis Club, is has a vast selection of facilities including: Pool, Padel Courts, and a Restaurant. They offer both Padel and Tennis lessons for all ages, and also Pilates classes. During the summer they have kids club, in which children can play and meet other children whilst learning new skills.
